What's New in Ohio
Two work days were held at Tri Valley WLA. New barrels were installed in the Kennel Runs and
Boards on the Corrals were replaced. Final approval from USFWS to complete the land swap
was announced at the August meeting. The ban on quail release at Tri Valley will be lifted with
the start of Spring Trial season 2011.
Who Are We
The ABDCO is comprised of licensed AKC and American Field trial and Hunt Test
giving Clubs. We work with the State to schedule Field Trials and Hunt Tests on
state wildlife areas and on private grounds. We promote hunting with dogs and
wildlife conservation. We serve as a voice for the Ohio sportsman to ODWL
Ohio Dog of the Year awards are given to outstanding dogs that compete in
American Field Pointing Breed Trials, AKC Pointing Breed Trials, AKC
Retreiver Trials and Hunt Tests.
Membership
Membership is open to any dog club or organization that hold field trials, hunt tests
or other competitive hunting dog event in the state of Ohio. Priority Dates are drawn
twice a year to use the state wildlife areas. Members of the ABDCO draw the dates
at the state priority meeting and resolve any conflicts as to who receives the dates
available. We also schedule dates on private grounds to help avoid conflicting
events within the group.
Field Trials go hand in hand with hunting. Proven breeding stock produce
outstanding hunting companions. Trials give the hunter additional opportunities to
enjoy their sport and their dogs. A schedule of Field Trials and Hunt Test held in
Ohio is posted on this website calendar.

Tom Honecker
Devastating loss to Ohio and the Field Trial Community
Prominent Ohio field trialer Thomas E. Honecker passed away on March 4 at Blanchard Valley Hospital in
Findlay, Ohio after suffering a severe
heart attack. He was 61 years old.
Tom was born on March 25, 1948 to Ken and Ethel (Beltz) Honecker. He was a 1966 graduate of Arlington
High School and a 1970 graduate of Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor of Animal Science degree.
Tom owned and operated his primary business K-T Equipment Rental in Findlay, Ohio which was
established in 1970 with his father Ken.
Tom was an avid outdoorsman and had a lifelong love of bird dog field trials. He served as president of the
Amateur Field Trial Clubs of America
and was a longtime AFTCA trustee for his region. He was the current president of both the Associated Bird
Dog Clubs of Ohio and the International Pheasant Championship Club.
As president of the AFTCA, Tom secured sponsorship of the Iams Company for the AFTCA. He was one of
the initial members of the Handler of theYear Awards committee. When the AFTCA began its print program,
Tom was one of the first to sign up. The print of his painting by artist
Herb Booth, titled “CedarOak”, appeared in the 2000 Christmas Issue of The American Field.
Tom was a much sought after judge, having judged far and wide at numerous trials across the country, both
American Field and AKC trials. Because of Tom’s love for training bird dogs, in 1995 he established
Cedaroak Plantation in Holly Springs, Miss., fulfilling his lifelong dream of owning enough land to hold field
trials. Tom hosted numerous trials at his Cedaroak Plantation. He always welcomed all who attended, the
perfect host. Tom was president of the Cedaroak Field Trial Club. He served as a sheriff’s deputy in Holly
Springs under his friend Sheriff Kenny Dickerson.
Tom participated in field trials throughout his entire life, winning his first championship at nine years of age.
He went on to win over 60 championships, including the 1998 National Championship at Grand Junction,
Tenn., with his beloved Cedaroak Kate. Tom commissioned a lovely portrait of Kate which hangs in the
great room at his Cedaroak Plantation. Last month (February) Tom handled his Cedaroak Bee Sting in the
2010 National Championship. Bee Sting did a commendable job, finishing the gruelling three-hour heat with
nine finds, a back and a stop to
flush.
Involved in wildlife conservation in Ohio and especially in Mississippi, Tom diligently worked for the
propagation of bobwhite quail. He worked
hand in hand with the State of Ohio Division of Wildlife in an effort to preserve and sustain field trials at the
Killdeer Plains Conservation Area. His love for Killdeer Plains was so deep that in 1993 he purchased land
adjacent to the wildlife area which he called Cedaroak Farm. This land opened additional ground to support
the courses for field trials.
In 2002 Tom partnered with his son Dr. Curt Honecker and Dr. Rodney Tienerand to establish Valley View
Animal Hospital in Dover, Ohio.
Tom also loved the sport of open-wheeled sprint car racing. He co-owned and sponsored Honecker Jacobs
Motorsports for several years.
Tom’s latest endeavor was the opening of The LaRue Horse Sale which is held the last Saturday of every
month at the Cedaroak Equestrian Center in LaRue, Ohio.
Tom was a son, husband, father, grandfather, loyal friend and a larger than life personality. His absence
has created a large vacuum in many lives. He was an excellent advisor and mentor to many in times of crisis
and could be counted on to deliver when he had committed to accomplish any
task.
Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel, and an infant brother, Danny. Tom leaves behind his wife,
Mary Schelby Honecker, son Curt
(Stephanie) Honecker of New Philadelphia, Ohio, daughter Nicole (Jeff) Beach of Norton, Ohio, and four
grandchildren, Cole and Nolan Honecker, and Schelby and Gavin Beach; his father Ken and his sister
Debra (Tom) Poole, and numerous friends.
Tom was buried on March 8 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Findlay, Ohio.
Memorials can be made in Tom’s memory to the AFTCA’s 20th Century Fund.
